Flat-tering Footwear: The Cutest Flats Today!

Every once in a while I hit this ‘stiletto wall’ and skimmers and flats prove to be this great comfort, so to speak.

I know some of you would rather live through the hip pain in those gorgeous Louboutins but a break from the usual is always refreshing, not to mention healthy. Flats do not have to be this go-to shoe. They’re fun absolutely versatile. Plus they encourage walking. Lots of it.

Shopbop‘s huge collection of flats is just awesome. Designer labels obviously have caught on to to the chicness of flats. It’s a great daytime shoe! And personally, I love how they come in different colors and designs. There are even quirky ones like the Sling Back Mouse Flats from Marc by Marc Jacobs. Very, very cute.

Another gorgeous design is from Diane von Furstenberg. The flat features a mix of leopard-print haircalf and deep blue pebbled leather. Other than the colors, its the textures that make it beautiful. And if that’s your thing, other textured designs that I stumbled onto are Missoni’s knit flats and Vera Wang Lavender Label’s snake embossed flats.

Vintage Appeal: Oxford Booties from Shopbop’s Holiday Sale!

Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Metal High Heel Booties are one of the first ones that we absolutely love.

There is a 1940s feel to these variegated, patent-leather pumps. Of course, it’s stacked heel is at least 4 inches high and which would not be so on older styles but this is a modern take on pumps. It even features a metal eyelet detail at its lace-up front. What I personally love most about it is its luggage color. For something bolder, it also comes in Bordeaux red.

The Lace Up Lug Sole Booties from RED Valentino is a great contrast against the Marc Jacobs pair. For starters, these shoes come in an army colored green and feature pinked, perforated trim for an Oxford style. The polished leather shoes are also lace up and feature heels over 4 inches high.

Lace Up Plaid Cuff Booties, $245, See by Chloe

I love the Lace Up Plaid Cuff Booties from See by Chloe because it looks utterly English. The leather is in a dark cognac color which is heartily vintage, so to speak. It is modern in design, with regard to the rubber sole and tapered 4″ stacked heel. But the addition of contrast laces and a plaid canvas cuff still retains the reserved, textured dressing of vintage British wardrobes.

Platform Oxford Booties, $323.40, Tibi

Finally, the proof that Oxford booties are the best fashion statement this year. This pair of Platform Oxford Booties from Tibi is deliciously vintage, with its brown, kidskin leather, faux-wood heel and that unexpected bow detail at the vamp. It is just pure genius that the masculinity of Oxfords jive well with the very feminine elements of heels and bows. My vintage-obsessed heart is shrieking with delight.

Hey ladies! It’s time for me to share my latest retro shoe find and I couldn’t be more excited. It goes to Marc Jacobs‘ Wingtip High Heel Oxfords, hands down!

Wingtip High Heel Oxfords in Plum/Cherry, $390, Marc by Marc Jacobs

There’s so much vintage pretty in this shoe I could hardly breathe! Its plum/cherry color is so now but with all the trappings of an oxford shoe. Notice the tasseled laces? Cute, isn’t it?

On the runway, these high-heeled oxfords were worn with socks underneath a plum blouse and a pair of gold pants cinched with a thin red belt. I imagine that if ladies before knew about metallic-colored clothing, they would’ve worn their oxfords the same way. Maybe better.

But with these high-heeled, wingtip oxfords, we like another runway look from Marc Jacobs. It swaps the gold pants with the Limelight Metallic Leather skirt, a partridge, bow-belted skirt. For the top, the plum blouse is exchanged for the gilded yellow Empire Sweater.

Growing up, penny loafers were my go-to shoes in school. They fit the stringent fashion rules of my Catholic school (low-heeled, black) without hassling me with laces. Comfortable but otherwise boring.

That is why until now, I haven’t looked to them as viable, stylish footwear. Today, they come in all kinds of heels, colors and patterns, and they go with practically anything.

Penny loafers began in the 1930s from Norway. They were low, slip-on and lace less shoes. They became more popular in the 1950s when celebrities like Steve McQueen and James Dean started wearing them. Shortly after, Michael Jackson brought it back when he incorporated it into his fashion in the 1980s.

Today’s loafer revival caters more to the women and my favorite has to be the loafer pumps. They blur the lines of conservative and sexy and I am half-wishing we had them back in the day. Well, better late than never.

We’ve featured Ashley Greene a number of times already here on our blog. Looks like the Twilight star has got a penchant for retro and vintage shoe styles because here she is again!

Ashley Greene was spotted getting herself a frozen yogurt at the local Pinkberry in Studio City, CA last October 1. She was all blue in a denim shirt and a paneled denim skirt topped off by two-tone blue strappy mary jane pumps:

I like the mary janes (cute perforated detail) but maybe not with that outfit. Not only is there too much blue and denim going on but it’s not a very flattering look on Ashley Greene. I would much prefer it if Ashley wore these mary jane pumps with an a-line dress like what she wore to Super Saturday; it’s more suited to her figure and would look cuter with those shoes.

Ashley Greene’s shoes are by Marc by Marc Jacobs. I couldn’t find a picture of the exact pair and these were the closest I could find:

Pixie Lott was seen at the Ashish Spring/Summer 2011 fashion show at the Somerset House in London last Tuesday, September 21st. She wore this cute pair of black and white penny loafers which provided a preppy contrast to her rock n’ roll black sequined motorcycle jacket, black lace top and black mini skirt.

I love all the contradictions going on in her outfit here. See-through lace with ruffles, sequins with a tough jacket – and of course, I must mention the actual gold padlocks dangling from the front of her designer red clutch.

Also, how cute is it that Pixie Lott is all rocker chick from the knees up but all schoolgirl-y from the knees down?

19th Century-Inspired Button Boots for Fall 2010

I’ve been on the lookout for a nice pair of fall boots since the last week of August (which I know some people consider to be already too late) and as a retro and vintage shoe lover, I found myself gravitating towards the crop of new button boot arrivals.

I’ve written about old-fashioned high button boots before and this 18th century-inspired shoe style still ranks high on my lust worthy shoe list. Button boots are lovely, oh-so-romantic, and are perfect to match with the warm-toned fall fashions that are coming out right now.

Can’t you just imagine the following button boots with a nice warm coat and a nice cozy scarf?

What do you think of her look? Love it or hate it?

Tell me, is it just me or do you also think ever since she married Keith Urban (no offense Mr. Urban), she has lost her ability to sparkle and dazzle on the red carpet (in this case orange)?

The interesting but unusual ensemble I am pertaining to is an odd combination of a military inspired structured dress paired with vintage (Victorian to be exact) inspired lace up booties.

I don’t know what she was thinking when she decided to wear this outfit but I wish I was there to at least give her a few tips. It doesn’t take a stylist to know something is wrong with the whole combination.

I can see the effort she took in trying to be trendy and fashion forward, but the effort left her looking a little off.

The whole look is so not the “Nicole Kidman, Celebrity Style Icon” I became a fan of. The shoes and the dress aren’t exactly bad, it’s just that each would look so much better with something else.

For instance, the dress would look better with platform pumps.
