Amy Adams was vision of feminine-chic while out and about in New York City on the first week of May. Quite a departure from her dressed-down, rugged style of late, the actress—who’s set to play Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman film, by the way—donned a ladylike shirtdress this time around. She cinched the blue frock at the waist with an edgy brown belt and added a pair of sexy cutout leather peep-toe oxfords to complete her classy style. A stylish white purse and dark sunnies made sleek finishing touches to her downtown look.

80s Leopard Print Back in Full Force

The leopard print trend in the 80s couldn’t have been in fashion at a better time. Leopard print connotes sensuality, authority and aggression, which are really what power dressing in the 80s was all about.

Do you think the leopard print trend now symbolizes the same things it did back in the 80s?

Jean Paul Gaultier Toe Ring Wedges with Flower Insets

I don’t know what it is about the spring and summer seasons that makes me attracted to wedge heels. It must be how nice they look paired with shorts, skirts, and summer dresses. I’m also usually drawn to raffia wedges and woven platform espadrilles, but these leather ones from Jean Paul Gaultier are just too beautiful to ignore:

These look very 60s mod, don’t you think? The chunky white and black lines, the contrast trim, not to mention that cute circle buckle at the heel strap.

You can also see from this bottom view that the floral design on the wedge heel isn’t just a 2D print – it’s a 3D stitched-on leather appliqué. It’s details like these that make a beautiful shoe even more beautiful.

70s Wavy or Chevron Print – Now a Classic

When I wrote this previous post on retro and retro-printed L.A.M.B. footwear, I came across a lot of shoes that had this print or something like it:

It’s the groovy wavy print that we see on a lot of clothes from the 70s. Although I noticed that there are a lot of shoes aside from the L.A.M.B. Verdu shoes that have this print, I don’t think that it’s particularly making a comeback this year or anything like that. It’s not coming back because this retro print has already become a classic.

It seems simple enough to recreate this pattern: it’s basically wavy or zigzag lines in a bunch of colors. But if you had to make anything like the knitted scarf above, you’d then realize that it’s actually difficult to pick which colors to match together in order to get the retro feel. Even the width of each line would have to be well thought out.

There are a lot of shoes with this pattern but in actuality, only a few got it right. Here are 3 of those shoes with the best 70s wave or chevron print:

Of course Missoni, the master of these kinds of prints, gets it perfectly. Rounded square-toe Missoni OM06 low pumps, now only $279.94 marked down from $484.00.

It’s a little unfair to choose Missoni for 2 out of the 3 places on this list, but they really are the best in this field. Missoni MM95LR peep toe slingbacks, $954.00 now only $435.00.

Here’s one that I think completely missed the mark:

Sanuk The Tube Flop

I get it that Sanuk is making a statement with the sock and flipflop combination but the chevron print ends up looking like an old curtain on these socks. If you think the Tube Flop can actually be cool, it’s $29.95 at Zappos.com.

L.A.M.B. Looks to Retro for New Shoe Collection

L.A.M.B., singer Gwen Stefani’s clothing line, has always gone the funky route when it comes to their shoe collection. So while I was expecting super trendy shoe styles for the new crop of L.A.M.B. shoes, I was pleasantly surprised to see that instead, the collection has a lot of retro undertones to it. Many designs were even obviously inspired by footwear from the past, and if it weren’t for L.A.M.B.’s signature high heel, would look very much like the genuine retro and vintage shoes we’ve feature here on RetroVintageShoes.

Here are 5 of L.A.M.B.’s retro-inspired shoes:

Straight from your mother’s 70s couch: L.A.M.B. Verdu, $329.00

Here’s L.A.M.B.’s take on the spectator shoe. The creamy brown and fondant pink combination is scrumptious. L.A.M.B. Valeria, $307.00.

One of the two oxfords in this list. See if you prefer this dressier peep toe ankle boot. L.A.M.B. Hip, now only $205.00.

These L.A.M.B. Valisas ($363.00) are the more goth oxfords, but maybe they’re easier to wear because of the 1″ hidden platform which effectively brings down the dizzying 4 1/2″ heel on these shoes to just 3 1/2″?

And last but not least, the L.A.M.B. Vails. The basketweave platforms on these resemble espadrilles, but the first thing you’ll really notice about these shoes is the gorgeous retro diamond print. $303.00.

Spotted: Platform T-Straps on Marion Cotillard at the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards

Like any other red carpet event, the 2010 SAG Awards held last January 23, Saturday, generated its own list of best and worst dressed celebrities. French actress and academy award winner, Marion Cotillard, was one of the lucky ones to be classified in the finer group. Her outfit was a stunning short white one-shoulder dress that was fully beaded and decorated with feather accents on the lower part of the skirt.

Personally, I’m not crazy about the feathers, but she does look ‘old Hollywood’ glamorous in the dress. What really caught my attention however, were the platform T-strap sandals she wore with the dress.

Instead of pairing the dress with the usual classic (traditional) T-straps, Marion opted for a more contemporary pair with thick platforms and thick vertical front straps. The choice added a modern and edgy appeal to the vintage looking outfit. As a result, the whole get up was a fusion of old and new, a mix of then and now, but tastefully blended.
