Anticipating Midnight in Paris

One movie I can’t wait to see is Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” featuring some of my favorite actors like Kathy Bates, Rachel McAdams, Adrien Brody and the ever-classy Marion Cotillard. More than a few paparazzi pictures of the movie set has leaked on the internet and judging by the actors’ costumes, the movie looks like it will take place in the 1920s.

Marion Cotillard for instance has been spotted a couple of times in t-strap mary janes pumps, a shoe style which is unmistakably 1920s. Her hair, clothing and other accessories are other obvious clues of course.

I can’t wait to see how else they will incorporate the 1920s into this movie. And of course, I’m also looking forward to seeing more authentic 1920s clothes and shoes in “Midnight in Paris”.

Fashion-Era.com calls the mary jane shoes as THE style of the twenties and I couldn’t agree more. As this was the decade when hemlines were first raised to show the ankle (accompanied by much controversy), more focus and attention was given to the shoe and thus the embellished, decorated and ornamented shoe was born. Toes became more pointed, heels got a little higher, and shoes were adorned with sequins, satin, buckles and bows.

Shoe lovers have a lot to thank the twenties for because if it weren’t for the women getting smart and demanding that their skirt become shorter so that they’d stop sweeping the dirt off the floor with them, we’d have really plain shoes! I’m also thankful that the 1920s shoe style still prevails even up to this day, with barely a change in their silhouette and design.

What Shoes Would you Wear with Marion Cotillard’s Red Dress?

For some reason, no matter how hard I look, I can’t seem to find clear pictures of what shoes Marion Cotillard wore with this red dress:

These pictures were taken outside the Le Grand journal studio, right before Marion Cotillard’s guest appearance on the French TV talk show last May 18, 2010. There are some pictures of her from afar, but all I can really tell from those is that she wore nude-colored shoes and that she looked stunning from head to toe.

Anyway, because I can’t find pictures of her shoes, now would be a good time to play what shoes would you wear with Marion Cotillard’s red dress?

With that full pleated skirt and fitted bodice, Marion’s dress is clearly inspired by the shapes and silhouettes of the 1950s. So with that, I thought it would be fitting to have shoe selections that are 50s-inspired as well.

Huarache Sandals – Your Alternative to the Gladiator Shoes

So have you heard of Huarache sandals? Chances are you’ve already seen one but didn’t know it. Here’s how it looks like:

Huarache sandals are Mexican in origin; they were first worn by native American Indians living in Mexico, and soon after by peasants who preferred the shoes because of its durability.

The characteristics of the Huarache shoe include hand-woven leather upper and hand-cut leather soles. However, during the 1930’s, the Mexicans started using rubber from recycled tires as soles for these sandals, more due to the reason that rubber soles were less expensive.

These sandals became really popular in the United States during the 1960′s, when the hippies started wearing them.

Before, Huarache sandals only came in limited sizes and these sizes were tailored to fit the Mexican feet, which were short, wide, and stout.

Today however, Huarache sandals come in many styles and sizes. Sometimes, the styles even go as far as looking like gladiator sandals such as the Elizabeth and James Edge Huarache Sandals Mary Kate Olsen is wearing in the picture below.

If you’re a sandal junkie and you want something new and different, especially with the numerous gladiator sandals swarming around, then buying a pair of Huarache sandals would be a great alternative.
