Ashley Greene is All Blue in Marc by Marc Jacobs Perforated 3 Strap Mary Janes

We’ve featured Ashley Greene a number of times already here on our blog. Looks like the Twilight star has got a penchant for retro and vintage shoe styles because here she is again!

Ashley Greene was spotted getting herself a frozen yogurt at the local Pinkberry in Studio City, CA last October 1. She was all blue in a denim shirt and a paneled denim skirt topped off by two-tone blue strappy mary jane pumps:

I like the mary janes (cute perforated detail) but maybe not with that outfit. Not only is there too much blue and denim going on but it’s not a very flattering look on Ashley Greene. I would much prefer it if Ashley wore these mary jane pumps with an a-line dress like what she wore to Super Saturday; it’s more suited to her figure and would look cuter with those shoes.

Ashley Greene’s shoes are by Marc by Marc Jacobs. I couldn’t find a picture of the exact pair and these were the closest I could find:

The Pretty Bows on Kate Hudson’s Fendi Raffia and Suede Pumps

Kate Hudson was seen at the set of “Something Borrowed” on May 4, 2010, wearing an all-white suit accessorized with a Chanel bag and a pair of very pretty bow pumps:

I’m not so sure about the way she rolled up the hem of her pants (looks a bit sloppy), but otherwise, Kate Hudson looks as fresh as a daisy in these pictures.

Although the raffia and suede material combination are very modern, I decided to feature these Fendi pumps here on Retro Vintage Shoes because they reminded me of the big bows that were all the rage in the 80s:

We owe all the bow trends that are coming out now to the 80s. If it weren’t for the trendsetters during that era, we would’ve been void of all the oversized bows and ribbons on our dresses, shirts, shoes, and more recently, headbands.

I wish it was as easy to find shoes with big bows as in the 80s, but things have been downplayed a lot. Can’t find shoes with bows to cover your whole foot anymore!

50s and 60s Square Toe Pumps at the Prada Fall 2010 RTW Fashion Show

The latest Prada fashion show has landed on fashion’s front pages again not because of the clothes but because of the use of (gasp!) models with boobs and butts:

Relatively “bigger” models: Miranda Kerr, Doutzen Kroes and Lara Stone

In real life, Dutch model Lara Stone is a teeny size 4 (US). As for the other two? Well, they’re only Victoria’s Secret models. So for Prada to use them in her fashion show shouldn’t be a big deal but because she has been sending down barely teenaged-body types down the runway for years, it’s become front-page headline material.

Whether it’s a publicity ploy or not, Prada timed her use of curvy models perfectly. Her Fall 2010 RTW collection is very much inspired by the 50s and the 60s and with all those ruffles, generously cut fabric, and details attracting all the attention towards the breasts and the hips, skinny waif models wouldn’t be able to carry the clothes as well as Miranda Kerr and company.

Miuccia Prada herself admitted that she only rehashed her old designs and even went as far as calling her collection “normal clothes”, but the 50s/60s inspired clothes are still all very lovely even to this day. There was the beehive hair, the peter pan collars, the full knee-length skirts and even the cat-eye glasses. As for the shoes, Prada sent down at least 3 different styles but these square toe pumps in retro colors were the most in harmony with the 50s/60s theme:

How the Espadrille Blew the Fashion World Away in the 1960s

Brigitte Bardot single-handedly popularized espadrilles when she was photographed wearing a pair while romping around St. Tropez in the 1960s. (She also put St. Tropez on the map but that’s a different story altogether). But what few people know is that espadrilles have been around even before Bardot, St. Tropez and waaay before the 60s.

Espadrilles have been made in Catalonia, Spain as early as in the 14th century. Castañer was one of the manufacturers in the area that produced espadrilles for soldiers, workers and peasants. Although the company had been around since the 1920s, they were badly hit by the Civil War in 1936. New technology such as vulcanization made their espadrilles production even more obsolete and by the late 1950s, they were on the verge of closing down. Nobody wanted to wear espadrilles anymore and people at that time preferred the newer shoe styles to the outdated espadrilles.

In the mid-1960s, a designer came to the languishing Castañer company. He asked them to produce a pair of espadrilles with a high heel. No one ever put a heel on an espadrille before so making a high-heeled pair was completely unheard of. Nevertheless, Castañer produced the high-heeled espadrilles for the designer. That designer was Yves Saint Laurent.

From there, the espadrille was catapulted from a lowly peasant-class shoe to luxury high fashion footwear. Castañer is now the premier maker of espadrilles and is one of the most prestigious brand names in luxury and fashion.

Such is the power of a creative mind. Espadrilles are now considered a classic wardrobe staple and with the wide variety of designs available, you can go from casual cool to summer-ready to date-worthy in no time.
