Bass Weejun Penny Loafers Then and Now

James Dean

Penny loafers, the lace-less, buckle-less slip-on shoes, have been around since the 1930s. They were copied from a shoe style from Norway that were worn mostly by Norwegian fishermen. George Henry Bass of G.H. Bass & Co. Shoe Company picked up this shoe and redesigned it into the classic penny loafer that we now know today. He gave it the name “Weejun”, which is of course derived from the word “Norwegian”.

When James Dean (pictured above) wore the Bass Weejuns with his biker jacket and his pants rolled up, he made not just an undeniable fashion statement but also turned the penny loafers into a timeless piece of clothing.

Presently, loafers are worn by men, women, and children alike. G.H. Bass & Co. is still regarded as the maker of quality penny loafers. Their range of penny loafers has broadened to include both classic and trendier designs.

  1. Being in my late sixties, I have watched the evolution of women’s peeny loafers from the late forties until now. I always tought from the early fifties tothe early sixties, the best made and certainly the sexiest when worn were the women’s Oldmaine Trotters made by the Old Town Shoe Company in Maine. Weejuns never did it for me, and I always thought a girl wearing Oldmaine Trotters seemed a lot sexier. In fact, even a very plain looking girl wearing Trotters was sexy. Trotters were known for their glove soft leathers and their handsewn kickers and vamps. In the eighties, Cole Haan took over as the quality maker of women’s loafers. A beautful girl sporting soft black leather Cole Haans was irresistable. Sadly, today there are no makers of quality women’s penny loafers…even Weejuns are made in Indonesia. Maine will always have the best makers of handsewn women’s penny loafers.

  2. Hi Frankie, thanks for short history lesson on penny loafers. I guess that’s how the world is evolving – we’re all sourcing our goods from places that makes them the cheapest and not necessarily the best. I’ll look up those Old Maine Trotters you mentioned!
